Congratulations Soror Uwana Akpan

Soror Uwana Akpan was recently inducted as a new member of the University of Texas Orange Jackets . Orange Jackets is one of the oldest student organizations at the University of Texas at Austin . Its foundation is firmly established through the conscientious and positive leadership of the most outstanding leaders on campus.
Since its formation in 1923, Orange Jackets has remained an exemplary honor and service organization. Being only one of two African American women chosen this semester for membership in this elite organization, Soror Uwana not only represents Delta Xi, but the University of Texas African American community as well.
Soror Uwana is a third-year Junior, majoring in Human Development Family Sciences and taking classes to fulfill the Pre-Medical track. As academic achievement is one of the pillars of our sisterhood, since her freshman year, Soror Uwana has shown phenomenal academic excellence. She has maintained above a 3.2 GPA every semester during her matriculation at The University of Texas at Austin and currently holds a GPA of 3.49.
Within Delta Xi, Soror Uwana serves as Recording Secretary, as well as Connections Chairman. Since her initiation, as Connections Chairman, Soror Uwana has taken a proactive role in keeping Delta Xi abreast of many political issues..
Led by Soror Uwana, Delta Xi is currently fulfilling the National pledge of taking a stand against global poverty. Soror Uwana has also actively participated with Alpha Kappa Alpha in numerous community service projects such as "Go Green" and Technology Camp for Rivercity Youth Foundation.
Outside of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Soror Uwana is a member of the Joint Admissions Medical Program (JAMP), a special program created by the Texas Legislature to support and encourage highly qualified, economically disadvantaged students pursuing a medical education. Through JAMP this summer, she was able to attend training at Texas Tech School of Medicine and
participate in hands-on learning. This is a highly selective program and her acceptance demonstrates that that she is a step above the rest.
Soror Uwana is also the 2009 Epsilon Iota Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated Spelling Bee Champion. Additionally, she was also recently selected as Neophyte of the Month by fellow Chapter members for submission to NPHC.
As you can see, Uwana upholds everything that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated represents: Sisterhood, Scholarship, Service and Leadership.

Soror Continues EXEMPLARY SERVICE through her PROFESSION:
Soror Conchetta White Fulton delivered a presentation recently at the prestigious Oxford University, Oxford England. Entitled Women in the Academy: Prospects and Promises, thirty faculty members from across the United States participated in the Rountable Discussion held at St. Anne's College. Much of the discussion centered around gender equities/ inequities that still exist in spite of progress made. A pharmacist by profession, Soror Fulton's presentation was entitled Women in the Pharmacy Academy: Rx for Success in the 21st Century.
Continuing in service to her chosen profession, Soror Fulton was recently reappointed to the Louisiana Medicaid Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Committee by Gov. Bobby Jindal (R). Having served without interruption since the committees' inception in 2001, she was initially appointed by Gov. Mike Foster(R) and reappointed in 2004 by Gov. Kathleen Blanco (D). The committee's charge is to ensure that the Preferred Drug List is composed of theraputically sound, safe, and cost-effective medications for the indigent patients of the State of Louisiana.

Soror Nicole Linen, a General member from Southwestern Assemblies of God was selected as a Leadership Fellow this summer. Soror Linen is a 4.0 Senior Psychology Major and is the Captain of the Lady Lions Basketball team. She was selected as the MVP for 2008-09 school year and a NAIA Champion of Character for her school representing women's sports.

Chapter President Receives Prestigious Award
In addition to the tremendous leadership she has provided Delta Xi Chapter as Basileus,
earning her the 2009 South Central Outstanding Basileus of the Year Award, Soror Travette Webster was the recent recipient of a University of Texas at Austin Tower Award. The Tower Award, sponsored by the Volunteer and Service Learning Center, is only presented to those students, faculty/staff members, community and civic groups that exemplify outstanding community service and volunteerism. She was selected as only one of three students of the entire 50,000 student body population at the University of Texas at Austin to receive this prestigious inaugural award.
Soror Lands Internship in West Africa

Soror Tynnetta Muhammad was one of four Wiley College
students selected to participate in the Summer 2009
Internship Fellows Program with the United States
Department of State. Soror Muhammad’s internship will
take place in Gambia, West Africa. The purpose of the
Internship Fellows Program is to identify talented students
from colleges and universities throughout the United
States that traditionally have not been the focus of State
Department recruitment efforts. The Fellowship will
consist of a paid internship, either domestic or abroad, and will be awarded to applicants who exhibit a strong academic record, and who are interested in
learning about a career in the State Department.
Chapter Basileus Lands National Office in UNCF Pre-
Alumni Council and Completes National Service Project
Soror Natasha Lawton, Miss National UNCF 2008, was recently elected
secretary of the United Negro College Fund, Pre-Alumni Council. She will
represent Wiley College at all regional, local and national meetings
of the Pre-Alumni Council. Additionally, Soror Lawton completed her
national service project as Miss National UNCF by collecting and
delivering donations of clothing items, toys, and children’s toiletries
to Mary’s House, a residence for battered women and their children in
Greensboro, NC. Members of Phi Chapter assisted Soror Lawton as part of Platform 3: Economic Growth of the Black Family.
Congratulations, Beta Kappa Soror Krystle Clarke!
At the 66th Joint Annual Meeting of the National Institute of Science and the Beta Kappa Chi National Scientific Honor Society, Soror Krystle won a first place prize for her paper titled "Cross Metathesis of Alpha-Methylene-Beta-Lactams" and was elected Southwest Regional Student Body Represenative for 2009-2010. The Beta Kappa Chi National Scientific Honor Society encourages the advancement of scientific education through original investigations; the dissemination of scientific knowledge; and the stimulation of high scholarship in the pure and applied sciences. For more than sixty years, the National Institute of Science has given students and educators a forum for the exchange of ideas and research in the disciplines of mathematics and science. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Soror Krystle is currently a junior at Huston-Tillotson University, in Austin Texas, where she is majoring in chemistry.
SOROR NESHELLE NOGESS NAMED PRESIDENT-ELECT OF LATA
LUTCHER, LA – Soror Neshelle Nogess has been named President-Elect of the Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators during their 41st Annual Conference. She will serve in the role of President-Elect for 2009 and will assume the role as president in 2010.
LATA is an organization comprised of tax professionals from both the public and private sector who seek to promote the effective and fair administration of local taxes. Nogess currently is the St. James Parish Schools’ Director of Sales & Use Tax, and represents the School Boardand the Parish Government in all discussions with LATA and advises on the actions and progress of the organization.
Soror Neshelle was initiated into the Eta Kappa Chapter at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA during the Spring semester, 1991. She is currently a member of the Omicron Lambda Omega (OLQ) chapter. Since joining OLQ, she has served in several elected positions. Additionally, she was the Co-Site Director for their reading tutorial program Start The Adventure In Reading (known by its acronym "STAIR") from 2003 - 2005. In 2004, Soror Neshelle was named Soror of the Year by Omicron Lambda Omega.
Soror Monique Edwards Named Acting Assistant Secretary
Soror Monique Edwards has been named the acting assistant secretary for the Louisiana Office of Mineral Resources and secretary of the State Mineral Board.
Soror Edwards will also continue to serve as Executive Counsel for Department of Natural Resources. The assistant secretary of the Office of Mineral Resources oversees the administrative functions of oil and gas leasing in the state.
A Louisiana native, Soror Edwards is former counsel with the Louisiana House of Representatives’ Committee on Natural Resources. Prior to that, she was the managing member for Edwards, Valdez and Ellis, LLC of Orlando, FL, heading up the business law and governmental relations departments.
Soror Edwards is a member of Gamma Eta Omega Chapter, Baton Rouge, and was initiated in Eta Theta Chapter Loyola University. Currently, she serves as Graduate Advisor to Eta Kappa Chapter at LSU and Co-chair of Undergraduate Concerns Committee. She is a graduate of St. Mary’s Dominican College formerly in New Orleans and received her Juris Doctor from Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge. Soror Edwards is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association and The Florida Bar.

Congratulations to Soror Joya Hayes who was honored by the City of Austin, Texas for her research, “Brown and Black Going Green: Strategies to Increase Minority Participation in Austin’s Single Stream Recycling Program.” Joya’s research was selected as one of only two projects that were presented to the Texas Municipal League’s competition for “Innovative City Initiatives.” Currently, Joya’s recommendations are being implemented in Austin to strengthen minority awareness concerning environmental initiatives that are being sponsored by the city. Joya served as Basileus of the Beta Psi Omega chapter from 2006-2009, and is currently the Southwest Central Texas Cluster Coordinator.
