The “Electrifying” Epsilon Mu, “E-llustrious” Epsilon Sigma and “Kaptivating” Kappa Mu Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, participated in a Joint Undergraduate Workshop on Saturday, January 16, 2010, at the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church located in Dallas, Texas.
Keeping in line with the “Every Soror Participates” theme, Graduate Advisors from each campus/university felt it was important for the sorors, newly initiated and elected to their positions, to come together in a group setting in order to gain a wealth of knowledge regarding local and national Constitution and Bylaws, Standards and Protocol of the sorority. Soror Donnetta A. Henry, Basileus of the sponsoring graduate chapter, Alpha Xi Omega, met with the Graduate Advisors and expressed her desire to meet the needs of the newly initiated sorors in order to develop them into tomorrow’s leaders. She also provided greetings for the day’s event. South Central Region Representative to the International Standards Committee, Soror Patricia Webb, presented a very informative Standards Workshop entitled “Standards: The Essence of Excellence” encouraging all undergraduate chapter members to excel in their chapter endeavors. Soror Webb and the undergraduate sorors discussed the status of their chapters’ relations by answering questions geared towards the established requirements in our sorority’s governing documents. The afternoon continued with a Conflict Resolution Workshop entitled “The Art of Resolving Conflict” presented by Alpha Xi Omega’s Second Anti-Basileus, Soror Kassie Gossom. This workshop taught undergraduate members five basic methods to resolve conflict as well as how to effectively reach the common goal of their chapter’s initiatives. Soror Cheryle Edmonds, Alpha Xi Omega Chapter Membership Committee Chairman, ended the Workshop session with a review of the new MP process. Soror Edmonds fervently expounded on the new initiatives of the membership intake process and reminded the sorors that this is a “serious matter” in regards to maintaining life long membership in the sorority. Undergraduate sorors also collaborated with Alpha Xi Omega Chapter in an Extraordinary Service Project by collecting canned goods to donate to the Breadbasket Ministry at St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas.
The undergraduate sorors were appreciative of Alpha Xi Omega Chapter for assisting them in becoming “future leaders” of our sorority. We anticipate 2010 to be a year of greater sisterhood, greater service and greater success for each of the undergraduate chapters as we seek to inspire change and promote progress in our society.
