From the Desk of

The color green symbolizes strength, growth, prosperity, and endurance. These elements of character also describe our great sisterhood. In 1908, there were just sixteen members in one chapter in one city of our emerging sisterhood. Now, in 2010, there are hundreds of thousands of members internationally serving in over nine hundred chapters. Our growth, therefore, is quite obvious. We exemplify our prosperity by demonstrating the wealth of love that we have for each other, the blessings we share and receive when we take advantage of the opportunity to serve. Celebrating one hundred two years of existence is evidence of our enduring nature.
South Central Region, in the year 2010 let us remember the power of green as we continue to serve mankind. Let us continue to protect our environment and our legacy for future generations by going green. Nationally, Alpha Kappa Alpha has already begun to go green by reducing our use of paper. This is both environmentally sound and cost effective. At the leadership conference in Anchorage, Alaska this past summer, for example, presentations were emailed to attendees. Last year’s regional conference reports were available on jump drives and given to chapter presidents to electronically disseminate reports to chapter members. There are chapters in our region that have further reduced the use of paper by having paperless chapter meetings. Conserving paper ensures that there are more beautiful, strong trees in our environment to help make our world visually appealing and also to help make the air we breathe cleaner. Going green will make our world a better place to live.
Sorors let me also encourage you to participate in tracking America’s growth by supporting the 2010 Census. Encourage those with whom you affiliate to do the same. The choice to be counted is in your hands. We want to continue to make a difference in the world we live and the lives we touch.
With sisterly regards,
Gwendolyn J. Brinkley
